內容 英國人香樂思(G. Herklots)1928年起來港任教於港大,此後幾十年以香港為家,用「歲時記」方式記載香港四季的變化及動植物品種,也詳述了早年的自然風貌。香氏在描述香港蝴蝶、蘭花、鳥類物種的多樣性時,都強調更勝英國。二戰前,無論本地人或外國人都認為香港土地貧瘠,物產不豐,只有歐美出產的才是高檔貨,因此香氏對本土物種的稱讚,便具劃時代意義。他筆下每一筆本土記錄都滿載感情。「地方感」一詞1977年始由人文地理學家段義孚提出,近年漸成顯學,香樂思1950年代的作品,其實已率先體現這種承載特殊意義的地方感,而且時時流露幽默睿智:
   毯蘭因花朵漂亮,成為英國溫室種植品種。有一天,一位女士帶同一束花來問我是什麼品種。我問花從何來,她說是先生從英國寄來,當我說這種花在她房子外數百碼就有很多時,她面露不悅。
