提要 Many free mass open online courses (MOOCs) are offered by top universities around the world and this becomes a great opportunity for learners to pursue independent and life-long learning at fit for interest of individuals. Although duration of courses is different from the traditional credit courses offered at universities, the commitment required to complete them is equally demanding. Learners are given weekly resources to read and watch, and participate in forum discussion with global learners of whom they have had diverse backgrounds including culture, language, educational levels, professional practices, prior learning experiences and working experiences they are expected to complete different types of scheduled assessment tasks. They can receive honor or verified certificates with distinction if they meet the set standard. This mode of independent learning appeals to learners because there are not registration requirements for any of the courses. Learners can choose to join in live or archived courses. The major difference is that there is no live discussion for the latter type. Learners with employment have full autonomy on course selection and how flexibly they manage their study schedule with the competing demands at work. Nevertheless, MOOCs are not substitution for conventional courses, but this has created an open gate for learners reaching professors whom they never have the chance before.
