IELTS & TOEFL

Comparison      IELTS      TOEFL

IELTS versus TOEFL

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System, and TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language. Both are well recognised standardised tests that provide an indication of your level of English proficiency. Both of them are commonly used by many universities worldwide where English is the medium of instruction as part of the admission requirements for undergraduate and postgraduate studies. There are 4 sections in both the IELTS and TOEFL tests: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

Making the Right Choice

First, review the requirements of your target institutions to see if they specify which test you must take. While most now accept both IELTS and TOEFL, there are still exceptions. If either option is acceptable, try a mock test of each to determine which suits you better. Some prefer American English, while others are more comfortable with British English. Certain candidates perform best with shorter tasks, whereas others may struggle with spelling. These personal factors are worth considering before deciding which test to pursue.
